Legionella Testing Labs

Legionella Testing Labs | Serving IL and MO

According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), between 8,000 and 18,000 people are hospitalized with Legionnaires' disease in the United States each year. Proactively managing the risk of Legionella bacteria in cooling towers and water systems is therefore crucial - and more cost effective than responding to an outbreak retroactively.

PDC Labs is an experienced legionella testing lab serving all of Illinois and Missouri. We provide legionella testing services to nursing homes, hospitals, hotels, and more - these types of buildings are high-risk for the presence of legionella, the bacteria that leads to legionnaires disease (on account of hot tubs, shower heads, and wet places that don’t normally get wiped or cleaned thoroughly.)

Legionella in Cooling Towers and Water Systems

As water from these sources is aerosolized, individuals inhale the Legionella-containing droplets and the organism is aspirated into the lungs. Smokers and individuals with weakened immune systems have a higher risk of developing Legionellosis

Legionella Culture Method

The "culture method" is the more thorough method for detecting Legionella from environmental sources, often requiring up to 10 days to complete. It is considered by many to be the "gold standard."

Legionella PCR Method
Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a molecular technique that offers a very sensitive method and only requires a few hours to complete.

In either case, we recommend building owners and hospitals speak with us to establish a Legionella control and management program, which would include routine monitoring and testing, in high-risk Legionella infection areas. This will do two things:

1) Indicate the effectiveness of control measures already in place, and
2) Provide an early warning of potential problems.
