Treatability Studies

In general, treatability studies fall into three categories: Solidification, Neutralization and Stabilization

Solidification

In solidification studies, the sample has already exhibited free-standing liquid by failing the paint filter test.  In the laboratory, representative sample aliquots are treated with various solidification reagents to determine the percentage treatment necessary to pass the paint filter test and load bearing capacity for PDC’s solidification operation at PDC 1. Solidification studies are also routinely performed for material disposal into PDC’s Indian Creek and Clinton landfills.

Neutralization

In neutralization studies, the focus is typically on wastes that exhibit the characteristic of corrosivity. In the laboratory, representative sample aliquots are treated with solidification/neutralization reagents until a desired pH is obtained.

Stabilization

In stabilization studies, the waste has already exhibited one or more metal toxicity characteristics or it is a listed waste which requires treatment to specific reduced levels. In chemical stabilization studies, the waste has already exhibited one or more toxicity characteristics or is a listed waste which requires treatment to PDC specified limits.
